I still come back to this one.

Fantastic game. Perfect to keep me occupied while on hold at work.

Simple, relaxing, easy to pick up and walk away from when needed. I've played hundreds of games in the last month or so.

I'd love more stats.

  • A list of the last 10 scores (or more)
  • overall average, not just for the last 10 games
  • how often my father tells me he loves me
  • score generated from matching colours vs shapes

Keep up the good work!

I’ve played over 1600 games of Domino Grove with the sound off, and I have to say, I was missing something.

Must ask: is there an algorithm to which notes are selected after a piece is placed, or is this completely random? It would be really cool to get some insight into the process here!

(+4)

That is an insightful question! A lot went into the notes. This game came together very fast so most of that was implemented in one day where I was collaborating with our musician Chris. I had to go back to look at the code to remember what it's doing XD

Basically all the score groups are sorted by length, so smaller groups score first. Each type of color and shape has a certain list of notes it can play when it gets scored. They're all from the same key. If it isn't the last score group, there is a little chance to add in a discordant note (which means it always feels resolved because the last group will always be harmonious).

There are also little randomizing factors that make it feel more dynamic. For instance a randomized time delay between notes played and a chance to play more notes at once and slight variations in volume as well. Chris also recorded a bunch of different variations of each note which helps it feel more natural.

I don't think people generally notice it consciously but I think having all that information and variation underlying the scoring (which is the only music in the game as you know) makes the game feel richer.

Would it be pretty easy to create an offline version?

it's really satisfying to hit a big chain. nice game!

I remember seeing this game on scratch. Is this the same person, a copy, what?

(+2)

The scratch game was a copy of this game. They credit us in the description of their copy.

Ok! Thanks for replying!

simple and pleasant is the best word

(+1)

Great game! Simple and pleasant.

I'm coming back to this game every so often and it's never boring. The perfect solitaire game. Ideal for passing some time.

I know I can play it in the browser on my phone, but are there any plans to release an app for android? It doesn't have to be on google play, you can just share the apk here for sideloading, or upload to f-droid if you wanna go open source.

Either way, thank you for making this! Here's my mediocre daily score:

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I would love to make a mobile version at some point when I have more time.

Thanks for considering it :)

When playing in the browser my phone is not very happy about it - it lags when placing pieces and heats up quite a bit 😁

Is there a way to mute the ambience/sounds? A toggle icon in the corner for that would do nicely.

By the way, I felt inspired by your game and got an idea for a somewhat similar game and started working on it. Can I add Domino Grove in the credits as inspiration? (It won't be coming out any time soon lol)

Yeah it could definitely use some love for a mobile version / performance issues. There is not currently a way to mute the sounds besides just muting the web page.

That's great that it inspired you to make a similar game, do it! And feel free to send it my way when you're done, I'd love to try it.

Found a visual bug on this beautiful and amazing game <3

[Request]: This is now part of my morning routine :) - there is a gif of gameplay below the game that is so distracting to my morning brain - could it be moved or disabled?

Hello, I'm happy to hear that it's part of your routine! The reason for that gif is that it shows up when someone hovers over the thumbnail when searching through itch and it gives them a good idea of how it plays so I would rather keep it there. I do want to help your morning brain though. So I can understand the problem a bit better - is there a reason that full screening the game doesn't work for you?

(+1)

I really appreciate that you replied! This is really not a big deal; I currently just lower the browser window - full screen might be a bit overstimulating O_O !! I will just deal and continue to enjoy your v nice game. Thanks!

(+1)

Okeydoke! Another option you might want to try is zooming in a bit. CTRL and + or CTRL + scroll works for me to do that. Might be a good intermediate solution between nothing and fullscreening.

I am still playing this every morning :) - thanks for adding something nice to my day :D!

I thought it said domino grave, 10/10

idk what the heck is this game? buttttt.... this is fun & satisfying to play

This game is great, came here from a scratch remake :D

Thanks for sharing how you found the game! I remember making some games with scratch back in the day. I found the remake and all the remixes they're making over there - really fun to see everyones' takes on the game. I wish the main remake could link directly to this page but at least you were able to find it by searching. Anyway, enjoy!

(+1)

Nice! Glad someone found it. :D

Hi! It's really impressive that you were able to remake the game in scratch. I don't know too much about the scratch ecosystem and it seems like you know a good deal about it. I'd love to talk with you about what it's like but I couldn't find your email listed on your itch or scratch. My email is ezraszanton@yahoo.com - please reach out!

Well, I can’t really share my email for personal privacy reasons, but feel free to reach out on Scratch (or here), I’d be happy to answer any questions you have! I might not be able to answer them all, as I’ve just started learning to code/using Scratch. BTW - If you want a great source of information relating to Scratch, I’d highly recommend the Scratch Wiki. :)

Got it, I just made an account over there and left a comment on the Domino Grove Studio page (I assume that's the best way to talk to you over there?). My username there is delverino

Hi Ezra! My wife has been trying to play Domino Grove on her Apple iPad in safari. Before the recent update, during every second game she played the tab would reload part way through the game and she'd have to start over. Since the update it sometimes saves the games state and sometimes doesn't, but now it reloads the tab part way through nearly every game. Let me know if you want any further details and I will try to dig them up.

Hello! Thanks for reporting this, I'd love for it to work smoothly on Safari. That sounds frustrating about it reloading partway through. A couple questions:

* When the game doesn't save, does the whole thing start fresh or does it load from a couple turns back?

* Does there seem to be any pattern to when the game reloads? (like, after you place a piece or after X seconds or something)

Looking forward to finding a fix for this!

(+1)

Hello,

Not sure if you are supporting web on mobile, but I got a bug where the piece stopped moving mid-drag. (I think I got a notification when that happened). Restarting the game reopens the save but without any piece to place, so I can't proceed.

The game was interesting for the amount I played at least.

We are supporting web on mobile, this is a really good bug to know about. Thank you for reporting it! We'll fix it shortly.

Just pushed an update that fixes the issue on my device, does it work on yours as well?

(+1)

Sorry, I missed this message. Trying it now. I'm able to play again. Will let you know if anything comes up. Thank you ~

So adictive!!

Hooray! I finally got a score over 300!

Woah congrats! We were wondering when someone would break 300.

il gioco è super carino!! ho raggiunto 236 <3

però ho provato a premere un po' di tasti sulla tastiera a caso, e uhhhh .... non so che ho fatto.

Really fun game, and everything is so polished and well put together!

So good
The background music is magical

Wow, I've become totally addicted to this game. There is much deeper strategy in this game than I initially thought and it's totally sucked me in. My PB so far is 298.

I've also discovered that this game is just as interesting if you play with the goal of getting a low score rather than a high score. It involves a little more luck, and makes the end of the game really strategic. The lowest score I've achieved so far is 12.

Really cute and nice puzzle game! I really enjoyed it. Really reminds me of the board game "Orchard" - have you played it? I think there was a digital version around the net, or you can PnP (print 'n' play) it really easily.
